Advancing academic literacy for English as an additional language learners

Developing literacy skills across the curriculum for all underachieving pupils including advanced bilingual learners.

Advancing Academic Literacy for English as an Additional Language Learners

The Equality Diversity Inclusion Team - EDIT (formally Support Service Kent (ISSK)) advisory teachers offer consultancy, modelling individual and group support, bespoke and centralised training through CPD Online to ensure best outcomes for advanced bilingual learners.

Teachers need to be able to develop their knowledge of the pedagogy of language acquisition if they are to move pupil’s use of language from Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) to Cognitive and Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) which is the key to overall cognitive development and realising educational potential.

EDIT can support schools to develop pupils' speaking and listening, reading and writing skills across different genres in all subject areas through a structured, scaffolded approach to language learning. EDIT will work with teachers and teaching assistants to help them develop a range of practical strategies, activities and learning opportunities which will promote the engagement and accelerate the progress of all pupils with low literacy skills including advanced bilingual learners.
