Street Based Violence and Gangs – Understanding the Risks for Young People.
An Awareness Raising Training Course for Foster carers.
Francis Osei Appiah, the charity’s CEO and founder, has a personal and painful experience of serving a lengthy prison term and uses his experiences of time in detention to bring home the harsh reality of life in prison in the charity services. He left prison with a Bachelor of Honours in Health and Social Care and has now set up a registered charity called Reform Restore Respect (RRR).
Learning outcomes
Francis will cover:
• Placing the risk of gangs in Kent context
• What are gangs, how do they work, how are they formed and what is the structure?
• Who can get drawn into gangs and identifying vulnerable young people
• Understanding ‘street’ words and language
• Understanding the compulsive and propulsive factors behind gang involvement
• Fear of criminalisation from the perspective of professionals
• Multi agency panels of support / Team around the young person
• Implications for foster carers / multi agency working /information sharing
• Support needs of young people and support needs of foster carers.
