Making Maths Clear: Effective Modelling Strategies

Audience: Orimary
Single session
  • Primary School Improvement Training Package
  • Foundation
  • Key Stage 1
  • Key Stage 2

Brief overview

This course explores how effective teacher modelling can improve pupils’ mathematical understanding and reasoning.

Drawing on the NCETM's research on effective pedagogies to teach maths, Ofsted’s 2023 maths subject report, and EEF research on explicit instruction, we will unpick what high-quality modelling looks like in practice.

Participants will learn how to model with clarity, purpose and precision—supporting all learners to think mathematically and build deep understanding.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the role of teacher modelling in supporting mathematical thinking.
  • Apply key features of effective modelling, including clarity, coherence, and sequencing.
  • Use representations and structures to expose mathematical concepts.
  • Anticipate and address misconceptions through careful modelling.
  • Adapt modelling to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND.
  • Reflect on and refine their own modelling practice to maximise impact.
