Maths teaching was significantly impacted by the Covid pandemic. As a result, for many pupils, particularly those who are more vulnerable, they have yet to ‘bounce back’. Maths lessons are not enjoyable if you lack the conceptual understanding to make sense of the procedures. If every lesson, every piece of homework is a struggle, it puts a dent in your self-confidence and self-belief. Maths just isn’t fun.
Finding the joy in maths begins at home, with positive role models and ‘can do attitudes’. How do we help to reignite a passion for maths amongst our pupils? And, possibly more importantly, with parents and carers too?
Maths for Kicks, Not for Ticks- Andrew Jeffrey (Keynote)
The National Curriculum is currently under review. Whatever the outcome, it is clear that we need to radically reconsider how we think about and engage with mathematics. In this keynote Andrew will suggest what has gone wrong, offer some pointers as to how we might address the issues, and offer some practical ways to bring back the joy of maths in our classrooms.
Curious Minds Count: The Joy of Mathematical Discovery- Alex Bellos (Keynote)
Alex will entertain you with stories from his career as a maths populariser. He will show how he engages the general public with mathematical ideas, and suggest tips and tricks to help make primary school children fall in love with the subject.
Delegates will also attend a number of interactive workshops including Purposeful, Playful Practice with Grace Coker from the Education Endowment Foundation and Helping Families Love Numbers with Ishraq Li-Rahmen from the UK Charity National Numeracy.
