Brief Overview

Practical support and guidance

SENCOs have a valuable, varied and demanding role in schools, having to 'fire fight' and think strategically everyday. This session aims to support SENCOs on a practical level with strategies to manage a range of issues, including: managing difficult conversations with parents/ carers; prioritising work load; and increasing the independence and accountability of class teachers when supporting children with SEND.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand how to balance operational SEND issues with time for strategic planning.
  • To discuss and review current practice.
  • To know how to support teachers and teaching assistants to become more skilled in identifying, planning and adapting learning for children with SEND (including managing provision plans and personalised plans).
  • To build on strategies when managing difficult conversations/ meetings.
  • To build on knowledge and understanding regarding monitoring provision for SEND learners.
