Brief overview

A teaching assistant's role is varied and it can be difficult to know which support is best for which situation, whether this is 1:1 or group work. At the heart of this is being able to build positive relationships and understand the needs of the child.

This two part course aims to provide teaching assistants with top tips and strategies which they can take back to the classroom and feel more confident in supporting the young people they are working with.

Learning outcomes

Session one will cover:

  • What does it mean to be an inclusive teaching assistant?
  • How the role of the TA has evolved over time.
  • Key documents including the 'Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants'.
  • Inclusive practice.

Session two will cover:

  • What does support look like throughout the lesson?
  • Importance of the learning objective.
  • What is effective feedback and why is it so important?
  • Questioning.
  • Understanding the meaning of words and sentence stems.
  • Memory aids.
  • What does an inclusive environment look like?
