Equality: Schools duties

The Equality Act 2010 offers protection against all forms of discrimination related to the nine protected characteristics of:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation.

In May 2014 the DfE published ‘The Equality Act 2010 and schools: departmental advice for school leaders, school staff, governing bodies and local authorities
All schools including academies, have 2 duties:

    1. A general duty to:
      • eliminate discrimination
      • advance equality of opportunity
      • foster good relations across all characteristics.

    2. A specific duty to:
      • publish information to demonstrate how they are complying with the Public Sector Equality     Duty
      • prepare and publish equality objectives.
