A nationally recognised 6 day training course delivered by Educational Psychologists (EPs) which is the first step to becoming a fully accredited Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA).

What is an ELSA?

  • ELSAs are emotional literacy support assistants working in schools.
  • ELSAs help children recognise, understand and manage emotions to increase success.
  • ELSAs plan and deliver individual (and small group) interventions usually lasting 6 to 12 weeks.
  • ELSAs receive 2 hours of group supervision from an EP every short term.
  • ELSA interventions can be started following completion of Day 2 and opportunities to put the training into practice at this point is encouraged so that ELSAs-in-training can bring questions and share anonymised case studies of the children they are working with.

Your school will be expected to:

  • Provide protected time for planning and delivery of ELSA interventions of around 1 day per week minimum.
  • Release the ELSA for termly supervision with a EP following training.
  • Identify a named line manager for each ELSA at the time of booking who can: a) attend the afternoon session of Day 1 and b) support the implementation of ELSA in the school.

After training, to become fully accredited and registered, ELSAs will need to:

  • Attend a years worth of supervision with an EP.
  • Provide impact data on their ELSA interventions.

For more information about course content please see our page on Kelsi https://www.kelsi.org.uk/special-education-needs/educational-psychology/educational-psychology-services/core-preventative-services

Slides and resources will be made available to participants the week before the training is scheduled and some may need to be printed by the participant to bring on the day. Printed resources will not be brought by the trainers.
