Empowering Futures: The Advantages of Supported Internships for Students with SEND
In the ever-changing landscape of education, it's important for schools to equip all students with the skills and confidence necessary for success beyond the classroom. For students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), the transition from school to the workforce can be daunting. However, supported internships offer a transformative solution, providing tailored support that empowers both students and schools alike.
Nurturing Student Potential: Personalised Support for Success
During our Supported Internships Study Programme, students in their last year at school engage in tailored internship placements for three days a week, ensuring they acquire essential skills relevant to their chosen career path. This individualised approach, designed to meet the unique needs of each student, fosters a sense of confidence and self-assurance as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
Our Commitment to Student Success: Comprehensive Support Every Step of the Way
At The Education People's Supported Employment Service, we are dedicated to supporting students and schools throughout the internship journey. Working collaboratively with teaching staff, parents/carers, and students, our team ensures a seamless transition into the workplace. With expertise in addressing a diverse range of needs, our mentors provide ongoing support to ensure students thrive in their internship placements.
Unlocking Opportunities: Key Support Services for Students
We work closely with each student to identify their aspirations, needs and abilities, creating a vocational profile that serves as a roadmap for their journey to employment. By tailoring support strategies and securing internship placements aligned with each student's goals, we empower them to pursue meaningful career paths.
Through vocational profile assessments and local employer engagement, we facilitate successful internship placements that provide valuable hands-on experience. Our team provides job coaching and in-work support, ensuring students feel supported and confident in their roles.
We provide structured training to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to travel independently. From journey planning to road safety, our comprehensive programme equips students with essential life skills that enhance their employability and independence.
We started using The Education People a few years ago to supply Supported Internships for selected students to support the work experience element of the transition programme we offer. We have continued to use them every year since, and expand our use with them, mainly due to the success they have brought. They have proven to be flexible, creative and accommodating which is important to us as we always strive toward a bespoke provision for our young people.
They always start by finding out what the student likes and can cope with prior to setting up the placement and once the student is settled, they begin to increase the level of independence whilst providing us with regular reports of progress.
