Brief Overview

The Ofsted Handbook and Preparatory Conversation

This briefing aims to provide a succinct overview of the Ofsted handbook, looking at the most recent updates and considering possible implications for leaders.

There will be a thorough exploration of the handbook, unpicking each of the key judgement areas in terms of evaluation and grading, along with advice on how you might prepare for these in relation to the context of your own school. You will have an opportunity to hear from those who have been recently inspected and find out about their experience of the process, including any lessons that were learned along the way.

By the end of the session, you should feel better equipped with the knowledge, tools and confidence needed to navigate the inspection process more effectively.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the overarching objectives that Ofsted evaluate against during inspections, including possible implications for school leaders.
  • Recognise what happens before, during and after an Ofsted inspection, including during the different deep dives activities and preparatory phone call.
  • Know the key areas Ofsted inspect and how each role in the setting is relevant to this.
  • Understand the practical steps that can be taken to prepare for an Ofsted inspection.
  • Learn from colleagues who have recently been inspected by Ofsted.
