Oracy - articulating ideas, developing understanding and engaging with others through speaking, listening and communication is an essential building block for children's academic progress (Oracy Education Commission 2024). Often referred to as the fourth 'R' (reading, writing, arithmetic and oracy), this is a skill that can be progressively taught and which benefits all children, particularly our most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
The Ofsted document' Strong Foundations in the First Years of School' reaffirms the place of oracy as intrinsic to children's early development. Improving oracy is also a stated priority for the new government and the ongoing 'Curriculum and Assessment Review' is firmly focusing attention on children's speaking and listening skills.
This KS1 conference is timely in providing a unique opportunity to consider how to optimise opportunities for strengthening oracy every day and in all subjects in years 1 and 2.
The conference will begin with an inspiring keynote presentation from world renowned author and independent adviser Dr Julie Fisher and be followed by workshop presentations from leading practitioners and experts in this field. Places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.
