Audience: Primary
Single session
  • Primary School Improvement Training Package
  • Key Stage 2

Brief Overview

This course will help teachers and teaching assistants to develop knowledge and understanding of Bar Modelling and how it can be used to develop a structural understanding of mathematics and reveal the calculations pupils need to perform.

Please note: The structure of this course will mimic that of the other Bar Modelling courses (KS1 16/10/2023 and Y3/4 19/10/2023). Delegates booking onto all three courses may find some of the content repetitive.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the concept of part-part-whole relationships within the structures of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions.
  • Understand how to make the transition from concrete models, to pictorial representations, to abstract working.
  • Know how to use the bar model to give a mathematical representation of a word problem.
  • Know how to use the bar model to solve single and multi-step problems.
