Brief Overview

For Year 1 and 2 Teachers

The recent Ofsted science subject report and research review and the EEF review of approaches to teaching primary science, all strongly emphasised the importance of robust teacher subject knowledge in improving primary science outcomes.

This session will focus on the key subject knowledge requirements of the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum (Year 1 and Year 2) to ensure that you are confident to deepen pupils' understanding, pick up their misconceptions and make appropriate connections to other areas of science.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will:

  • develop their own knowledge and understanding of the scientific concepts covered in the Year 1 and Year 2 science curriculum, enabling them to deepen pupil understanding, identify and correct misconceptions appropriately and make strong connections to other areas of the science curriculum
  • understand what prior knowledge pupils need to be successful in each year group and how the scientific concepts in Year 1 and Year 2 underpin knowledge in Key Stage 2.
