Strengthening Leadership of Phonics and Early Reading

Brief overview
This course will develop the knowledge and leadership skills of Phonics Leads, Early Reading Leads and English Subject Leaders. It will deepen their understanding of the lenses through which phonics tracking documents should be analysed to reveal vulnerabilities within cohorts.
The course will also explore the key elements of high-quality phonics teaching and learning to upskill leaders to carry out their monitoring role.
Learning outcomes
- Know how to use a tracking system to accurately gauge the proportion of pupils who are ‘on track’ throughout the year.
- Know how to use tracking information to pinpoint high priority groups and individuals – pupil premium, boys, SEN, etc.
- Understand the ‘Phonics trajectory’ – know who should be where and when.
- Identify patterns and areas for investigation within school’s own data.
- Know what good phonics teaching should look like and what should be included in every session.
- Consider ways to give pupils the best chance of success in the Phonics Screening Check.
