Early Years Child Protection Basic Awareness

Audience: Early Years & Childcare
Single session
  • Foundation

Brief Overview

The course provides essential child protection training for any staff working with children in early years settings, in line with requirements outlined in national and local Kent guidance, including the ‘Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage’, ‘Working together to safeguard children’, and ‘The Prevent duty’. The course will help give staff the knowledge and skills to recognise and respond to possible abuse and identify their own responsibilities for keeping children safe.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand what safeguarding and child protection is and to ensure delegates are aware of their safeguarding roles and responsibilities.
  • To identify and explore the relevant national and local legislation and guidance for safeguarding children in early years provision.
  • Enable staff to recognise the different types, signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, and other safeguarding issues, including neglect or abuse outside of the setting.
  • To understand the local procedures for responding to concerns and in a timely and appropriate way, including recording and reporting.
  • To explore safe practice expectations within early years settings to help keep staff and children safe, including inappropriate behaviour displayed by members of staff.

The course will use a variety of interactive scenarios and discussions to help delegates put learning into practice and is delivered by experienced trainers who have a sound knowledge of social work and early years practice.

This course will provide a basic introduction for those new to their role or can be used as a refresher session for existing staff. Please note, this training will not address individual setting policies and procedures; early years providers will need to provide additional training internally to ensure staff are familiar with their own specific child protection policies and processes.  Staff working in settings where children live outside of Kent can access this course, however, they will need to undertake independent research to ensure they understand their own local guidance and processes.

This session will run as an interactive virtual session (either via Zoom or Microsoft teams).  Please note that these sessions are not recorded, and delegates will need to attend the live session.  Delegates should ensure they are able to access the training platform and will require a working camera/microphone so they can participate in discussions and activities.  Full attendance/participation is required to receive a certificate of attendance; non-participation, missing content, late arrival/leaving early may mean certificates are withheld.
