Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is essential for children and young people's individual development, and linked with the promotion of British Values, will impact on future community cohesion across local, national and global communities.

Before making a final judgement on the overall quality and standards of education in a school, inspectors must evaluate the impact of the provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.  This is a key area of inspection, under-developed SMSC provision will affect Ofsted's evaluation of a school's overall effectiveness.

Ofsted highlights the importance of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as central to the development and growth of pupils as future citizens. Outstanding practice is exemplified when ‘The school’s thoughtful and wide-ranging promotion of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development enables pupils to thrive'.

Through this training delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the definitions and place of spiritual, moral, social and cultural in the Ofsted context
  • Articulate what spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is already happening in school though ‘The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils toolkit’ and share good practice
  • Explore resources which exemplify spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
