Standard 3 monitoring visit for residential special schools
Standard 3 monitoring visits comply with Standard 3 - monitoring by independent visitors of the National Minimum Standards for Residential Specials Schools, which were introduced in 2002 and amended in September 2022. The standards contain arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children/young people for whom accommodation is provided by residential special schools. The standards provide the minimum standard below which no school is expected to fall in securing outcomes for boarders. Schools are inspected against the standards during annual Ofsted Social Care inspections.
Monitoring visits are carried out six times per year and are usually unannounced. A written report of each visit is provided in which managers and governors are provided with a snapshot of strengths and areas for development of the care provision. The visits provide an opportunity for external monitoring of practice and policy implementation and the care provision is supported in the compliance, maintenance and development of the national minimum standards for residential special schools. The visits includes checks on the school’s records, an evaluation of the effectiveness of the care provided to children/young people and whether they are safeguarded, an assessment of the boarding accommodation and facilities, and opportunities for any child/young people or member of staff who wishes to meet the visitor.
