Under the Equality Act 2010 a duty is placed on schools to raise the attainment of vulnerable learners and pupils from protected characteristic groups. For children learning English as a second language, developing literacy skills can be a challenge - completely different from learning to read and write in their first language.

In this course you will look at a 'thinking skills' approach to developing the literacy skills of this group of pupils across all areas of the curriculum.

  • To look at the features of second language learning.
  • To understand the two levels of English fluency – Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive and Academic Language Proficiency (CALPS)
  • To examine a ‘thinking skills’ approach to subject literacies.
  • To look at some possible tools to support the development of academic literacy (CALPS) in your classroom.

Delegates will gain an understanding of the two stages of second language acquisition, look at subject specific literacies and how to make them accessible to children with EAL and develop a method of planning to improve the literacy skills of EAL learners.
