Refugee Support Package

Audience: Primary

The Refugee Support Package, created by our experts in the Equality Diversity Inclusion Team (EDIT), is designed to support schools in welcoming, inducting and teaching refugees and new arrivals. It is suitable for all professionals across all of the key stages including early years.

We have created this Refugee Support Package to support the many schools who are now welcoming refugee pupils and new arrivals, some of whom are at very early stages of English. The package initially runs to 31 March 2024.

The package provides guidance around the areas of:

  • induction
  • the silent period
  • teaching and learning across the four skills
  • assessment
  • auditing your practice
  • identifying Special Educational Needs (SEN) in pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL), and
  • resources.

By purchasing the Refugee Support Package you will have access to:

  • three Refugee Networking meetings per year - a chance to network with other schools, share good practice and discuss questions and concerns
  • three EAL Pedagogy HUB meetings per year - where EAL good practice strategies and current research will be shared covering the four skills
    • listening and understanding
    • speaking
    • reading
    • writing
  • access to an E-learning module on supporting refugees and new arrivals
  • access to a resources pack which will be updated seasonally
  • access for two members of staff to two EDIT CPD online courses (details below).

As part of the Refugee Support Package we will be running three virtual networking meetings which will be taking place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 2 May 2023 from 4pm to 5pm
  • Monday 25 September 2023 from 4pm to 5pm
  • Monday 22 January 2024 from 4pm to 5pm.

As part of the Refugee Support Package we will be running three virtual EAL Pedagogy HUB meetings which will be taking place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 13 June 2023 from 4pm to 5pm
  • Wednesday 18 October 2023 from 4pm to 5pm
  • Thursday 14 March 2024 from 4pm to 5pm.

As part of the Refugee Support Package two members of staff will have access to the two CPD Online courses below:

  • Preparing for, Welcoming and Inducting Newly Arrived Children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) (Primary/Secondary)
    Tuesday 4 July 2023 - 1.00pm to 3.15pm - via Zoom.

  • Teaching Assistants: Assessing Refugees and New Arrivals with English as an Additional Language (EAL)
    Date TBC

If you have purchased the Refugee Support Package and the above sessions have taken place, additional dates will be made available as soon as they have been scheduled.

By purchasing the Refugee Support Package for a one off payment of £595 +VAT, you can see from the table just how much you will be saving compared to purchasing individual support as required. The package initially runs to 31 March 2024.
