St. Luke’s Nursery is a warm, nurturing pack-away preschool set in the heart of the St. Johns area of Tunbridge Wells. It has a strong community background and has been running since the 1960’s under various owners. Its happy, lively, friendly ethos means that St. Luke’s is a highly regarded setting within the community, as well as being deemed a ‘Outstanding’ setting by Ofsted. The staff and community is one of its strongest characteristics and makes it a really special Preschool; it is this which draws people in.

The Role

As the manager of St. Luke’s Nursery School, your roles and responsibilities will be wide ranging, varying from the physical aspects of setting up and packing away the preschool in the beginning and end of the day, to managing the team. This means working closely with the owner and a small team of approximately six.

As manager, you will also work closely with children and families, ensuring children are always kept safe; an important part of this role includes being the Designated Safeguarding Lead at the setting. To support this, you will ensure that all staff are trained in safeguarding, understand and follow all policies and procedures that are required for an Early Years Setting. The manager ensures that all legislation is compiled with and followed; including Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, inclusion, and safeguarding.

It is also essential that you lead by example when it comes to planning, developing play and monitoring progress within the setting, using the statutory framework as your planning tool.


  • Building relationships with parents/carers and other family members
  • Manage the intake to ensure it grows as well as meets the ratio requirements of staff needed per session
  • Plan and deliver the curriculum using the Foundation Stage Curriculum for guidance
  • Ensure all children have access to resources and activities that are relevant to their needs and interests
  • Supervise staff on a daily basis and ensure all staff are adequately trained
  • Help to set up and pack away equipment at the beginning and end of each session
  • To be one of the Designated Persons for Safeguarding and Child Protection, making sure that the policy and procedures are followed by all staff, volunteers and parents/carers
  • To be responsible for ensuring there is accurate monitoring and observations of children within the setting
  • To work in collaboration with the owner
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness at the setting
  • To ensure there is equality of opportunity for all children, working closely with the SENCo to ensure the needs of all children are being met.

Person Specification

  • To have a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification in Childcare, as a minimum
  • At least 2 years experience of working in an Early Years setting post qualification
  • Experience in effectively managing and leading a team
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • A secure knowledge of the Foundation Stage Curriculum and a commitment to providing high quality activities across the curriculum
  • Good verbal and written skills
  • To develop good relationships with parents/carers
  • Have a secure knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and able to lead staff in ensuring all safeguarding policies are followed
  • A commitment to Equal Opportunities for children and staff
  • You will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check and provide two references.

More Information

Full-time, term time.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 7am-3pm
Wednesday and Friday 7am-12.30pm term time.
